The excavation of two ponds is progressing well on Shapwick Moor Nature Reserve.

After a very wet winter, volunteers at Shapwick have finally been able to excavate 2 new ponds on the reserve. The funding for these came from a national scheme run by Natural England to widen a network of ponds specifically to reduce the decline in native Newts.

Both ponds are located insight of public footpaths and they should attract many other species as well as Newts!  Although they will fill with water quickly, the marginal plants will take time to establish and the reserve hopes to be able to translocate plants from other more established ponds locally later in the year.

The huge amounts of spoil produced in excavating these ponds will be seeded with a conservation mix of grass seeds in the coming month.
