THE LYCHGATE LETTER AND SIGNATURES

Spring is in the air and usually at this time of year Richard Symonds of Lychgate Cottage, in the heart of the ancient parish of Ifield, would be preparing for adventures to share with the community.

Richard has lived at Lychgate for many years,  initially looking after his elderly mother until her passing when Richard was given the tenancy.   Known to some as ‘Mr Ifield’ due to his Saturday walks around the parish,  his phenomenal knowledge of ancient Ifield, his strong connection to St Margaret’s church and as the author of the popular children’s book, The Friendly Dragon of Ifield Brook Meadows;  all these have firmly embedded Richard in the landscape of Ifield.

Richard , a 69-year-old cancer survivor, who wears a cochlear implant due to profound deafness,  has been served with a Section 21 eviction notice as his landlord, the church, are increasing his rent by £275 a month which despite returning to work five days a week, he cannot afford.

Both Richard and Friendly Dragon are very sad because if Richard goes the Friendly Dragon will revert back to being a mere tree trunk & will lose all the children and adults who visit him;  Richard will lose familiar surroundings & the community he is such a big part of.  Please join us on the walk this Saturday, 21st January at 11am outside the Plough in Ifield.  We will set off to find the Friendly Dragon where Richard will read us an extract from the story.  Here you will be able to sign a letter asking for Richard to be allowed to remain at Lychgate Cottage with a manageable rent increase.

Experience the ancient parish of Ifield in all its beauty.   Meet the Friendly Dragon and feel the magic of community & belonging that Richard creates.  Children of all ages – and dogs – welcome.

If you cannot do the walk pop by outside the Plough in Ifield at 11am to sign the letter or contact myself or Iain & we will send the letter to you to sign.

KEEP RICHARD SYMONDS AT LYCHGATE COTTAGE WHERE HE BELONGS!

Psssst if you look carefully, you can sometimes see the Friendly Dragon peeping out from Richard’s letterbox when he is not in the meadow.
