THIS SATURDAY [NOV 4 2023] – GREAT PARISH HERITAGE WALKS – IN REMEMBRANCE: ROBINSON ROAD AND BEYOND – ‘BANG IN IFIELD WITH IAIN & SALLY’ – 11AM FROM THE PLOUGH IN IFIELD VILLAGE [RETURN BY 1PM]

Bethel Chapel in Robinson Road – and its cemetery [not shown] – formerly New Road/Church Road/Post Office Road. Neither the Chapel or Cemetery or Road exist anymore [demolished to make way for ASDA supermarket and its car park]. All that remains is the ancient Yew Tree which was once in the Cemetery [and the Plaque on the Tree]. Known graves re-interred in Snell Hatch Cemetery – the rest are in a mass grave [location yet unknown – possibly under ASDA’s car park?]

THE HIDDEN PLAQUE OF REMEMBRANCE TO ROBINSON ROAD [WITHIN THE ANCIENT PARISH OF IFIELD] – The Ifield Society

This plaque is in memory of the

Crawley and Ifield Hospital 1896-1938,

the Bethnal [Bethel- Ed] Chapel 1858-2002, the general post office 1895-1928,

and the British School 1854-1916,

founded by the Quaker Sarah Robinson

To those places here no more

Our lovely little Bethnal [Bethel] Chapel

Where people were buried next door”

A Hospital, post office, places we knew

They were all part of old Crawley

Robinson Road, favourite of all”
