JUNE 14 2024 – FROM THE ARCHIVES [12 YEARS AGO] – “NEW PLAN ‘MONSTROUS’ SAYS CAMPAIGNER” – WEST SUSSEX COUNTY TIMES – SEPTEMBER 27 2012

Plans for new houses west of Ifield have been described as ‘monstrous’ by a campaigner.

Richard Symonds, who co-founded The Ifield Society in 2001 to protect the area from development, said residents had been betrayed, hoodwinked, ignored, and dismissed as troublemakers over the past 12 years.

He said: “Both areas – The Meadows and Ifield Golf Club – are within the ancient parish of Ifield – the area which the Ifield Society has been trying to protect from private developers for over 12 years – ever since WSCC’s Local Structure Plan described this ancient area – with its 1000-year history – as an area “lacking in heritage and character” – as a pretext for giving the ‘green light’ to development of the whole ancient parish.

“That’s why the Ifield Society was born in 2001.

“That’s why regular ‘Ramblettes’ were organised around the parish.

“That’s why the Hawth was full twice with enraged residents, both Crawley Borough Council and Horsham District Council residents.

“That’s why St Margaret’s Church was full – twice”.

He said they understood that the west of Bewbush site [Kilnwood Vale – Ed], which has planning permission, was the alternative to development west of Ifield, and said they have no option but to continue to fight plans.
