UNPUBLISHED LETTER SUBMISSION
Dear Editor
Following on from the West of Ifield development warning [‘Ecological Emergency’, Observer Letters, July 31 2024], may I quote from an article in this local newspaper over 60 years ago [‘The Town Map Inquiry – Sewage And Surface Water’, Observer, April 13 1962]:
“Mr AS Wisdom, deputy solicitor to the Thames Conservancy Board, told the Inspector that…he did wish to make certain observations on the disposal of sewage and the methods of dealing with surface water from the development areas.
The Conservancy had informed the County Council that land on the western fringes of the town might be found unsuitable for residential development because of the liability of flooding from Ifield Brook.
The Conservancy were of the opinion that no more water could be accepted into the River Mole or its tributaries”
Let history warn – but are we listening?
Yours sincerely

“Natural England’s issue of an Interim Position Statement that Water extraction in the Sussex North Water Resource Supply Zone might be adversely impacting the ecology of the Arun Valley and that development should not be approved unless it demonstrates water neutrality”
